Homework

Homework

The purpose of homework assignments, and the guidelines and/or expectations should be made clear to the student at the time of the assignment. Students should talk to their classroom teachers with any questions about assignments or grades for a course. Homework may be assigned for one or more of the following purposes:

  • Practice — to help students increase competency with specific skills which have been presented in class.
  • Preparation — to help students gain the maximum benefits from future lessons.
  • Extension — to provide students with opportunities to transfer specific skills or concepts to new situations.
  • Creativity — to require students to integrate many skills and concepts in order to produce original responses.

Although the District relies on research-based practices regarding time allotment guidelines for student homework, students vary in their ability levels, learning styles, home resources, and need for additional work at home. Courses also differ in the kinds of material presented, equipment requirements, and degrees of supervision needed for assignments, making it inappropriate to state specific time requirements. Make Up Work

Make Up Work

Assignments and/or activities not completed because of an excused absence or tardiness may be made up in the manner provided by the teacher. Students should note that not all types of work can be made up (guest speakers, graded class discussions, etc.). Should this type of work occur on a date when a student has an excused absence, the assignment may be excused and not counted in the student’s grade OR an alternative assignment may be provided per the teacher’s decision.

Special Services

Special Services

Each District school has a Guidance Team to address concerns regarding student performance. Parents/Caregivers may contact their school guidance counselor for more information about this process. If a student is suspected of having a disability, the Guidance Team may refer the student for special education or a Section 504 assessment. The school psychologist assigned to the school will coordinate the special education process. Additional information regarding special services may be found in District Regulation and Procedure 2161 and 2161P, and additional information regarding Section 504 may be found District Regulation and Procedure 2162 and 2162P. A copy of the special education notice of procedural safeguards is available on the OSPI website.
